And Close As This

And Close As This (1986), offers an unrelenting melancholy and somber tone throughout the duration of the album. Instrumentally it is Peter Hammill only, and only on keyboards and piano. The arrangements and song structures are simple, and the melodies weak.

The technical information is perhaps the most interesting thing about this album: The music on these recordings consists of one pass of the hands across the keyboard.

For me there is only one song that is note-worthy: Too Many Of My Yesterdays, which is as great a song as Hammill has ever written.

In all fairness, I have to mention that this album often gets glowing comments on mailing lists and other websites. So anyone curious enough may yet want to investigate.
